Automatic detection pins hundreds of landmarks on a face, but two regions defeat it reliably: the hairline and the ears. The hairline hides under hair with a blurry boundary — algorithms cannot tell true roots from wisps and shadow; ears vanish behind hair, outlines flickering in and out. Yet several palaces hang precisely on these regions — so the tool asks you to drag a few points into place yourself. This step is manual calibration, and the accuracy of your placement directly sets the bands of the affected palaces.
Three hairline points: mark the true root, not the wisps
Three points to set: the sky centre (the hairline's midpoint) and the two hairline corners (where the line turns at the forehead's sides — the reference for the Sun and Moon angles). The plain-language rule is one sentence: put the point on the line where visible hair actually grows. Three common mistakes to dodge — do not mark the fringe's lower edge (that is where hair hangs, not where it roots); do not mark stray baby hairs (follow the solid mass of visible hair); do not be fooled by forehead-crease shadows, which are not hairline. A receding hairline should simply be marked as it is: measurement wants true proportions, not an idealised haircut.
The cost of misplacement is concrete: a sky centre set too low shortens the Upper Court and skews the Career Palace reading; corners marked at uneven heights turn the Parents Palace's symmetry into false data.
Four ear points: top rim and lobe, both sides
Two points per ear: the upper rim (where the ear's highest curve meets the head) and the lower lobe (the earlobe's lowest point). These four carry the core of the classical ear reading — 'top level with the brow, bottom level with the nose base' — and the ear-length-to-midface ratio rests entirely on them. Equally plain rules: tuck all hair fully behind the ears first, so the whole outline shows; mark the rim's crest, not the sideburn tips; mark the lobe's lowest flesh, and skip the earring if you wear one.
A frequent worry: one ear sits higher than the other — is that normal? Entirely. Most people's ears are not perfectly matched; mark what is there. The whole discipline of calibration is three words: mark the real.
The remaining points: confirm and nudge
Beyond hairline and ears, the interface shows semantic points at brow heads and tails, eye corners, nose wings, mouth corners, chin tip and the widest cheekbone spots. Auto-detection is already strong there; your job is a review pass — drag back any point that clearly drifted off the outline, leave the rest alone. The whole exercise usually takes a minute or two.
Two things worth knowing. First, every drag recomputes inside your browser — ratios update on the spot, and only the corrected coordinates travel anywhere. Second, once calibration is done, the report upgrades the affected palaces' confidence label to 'user-confirmed'. Those two minutes buy the difference between a Twelve-Palace frame running on seven palaces and one computing in full — the best-spent manual minutes in the entire flow.
